Carmel Private Collection Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc

Winery: Carmel Winery

Year: 2003

Type: White

Country: Israel (Galilee)

Grape Variety: 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Chardonnay

Note:

Alcohol: 12%

Mevushal: Yes

Date Reviewed: 11/29/06

Color: 2.5 (of 3)

Note: A bright, happy sort of golden lemon color.

Aroma: 5.5 (of 7)

Note: A strong lemon scent dominates the aroma along with milder butter and vanilla.

Taste: 8 (of 10)

Note: While I applaud the concept of blending Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes to produce a more interesting white wine, this effort from Carmel doesn't win me over. Like the aroma, the taste has a strong citrus element followed by lighter butter and vanilla flavors. There's not much else. There's no complimentary citrus flavor other than lemon, no fig or nut taste, no wood flavor to grab your attention. It's a good wine for what it does. It just doesn't excite me.

Total: 16 (of 20)

Food: I had it with an excellent chicken soup with matzoh balls. The wine held its own as a contrasting flavor.
