Bartenura Pinot Grigio Rose

Winery: Bartenura

Year: 2005

Type: Rose

Country: Italy (Pavia in northern Italy)

Grape Variety: Pinot Grigio

Note: A Pinot Grigio in a Rose is rare because it requires an unusually hot autumn sun to turn the grapes a unique copper color.

Alcohol: 11.5%

Mevushal: Yes

Date Reviewed: 7/17/06

Color: 2.5 (of 3)

Note: It's a beautiful cherry pink color that looks like orchids. It's a pretty, vibrant color of springtime.

Aroma: 6.5 (of 7)

Note: A sensuous aroma of strawberries and cream. It fills your senses with the scent of a fresh strawberry shortcake with hints of vanilla and flowers. Elegant in its simplicity, but brimming with flavor, it's a delicious experience.

Taste: 8 (of 10)

Note: For all the build-up the color and aroma give, the taste is a bit of a let-down, which is really odd for a wine that scores so well. Not that it's bad, mind you, it's just that I was hoping for even more. It is a bit flat and one-dimensional with lovely strawberry flavors but only a hint of vanilla, wood or anything else. What flavor it does have is sumptuous and tasty. It's just a little lonely.... It's a terrific wine and a real treat on a hot summer day but it had a chance to really go somewhere. It's the saddest I've ever felt about such a high score. It's very good, I just wanted it to be even better...

Total: 17 (of 20)

Food: I thought we were having Caprese salad and I wanted to try this with mozzarella, but Linda switched it up on me and we had falafel instead. The wine didn't really go with the meal, so I tried it again later on it's own. It's almost a dessert all by itself. Try it with chicken or, even better, asian food.
