Carmel Private Collection Merlot

Winery: Carmel Wines

Year: 2002

Type: Red

Country: Israel (Judean Hills)

Grape Variety: Merlot

Note:

Alcohol: 13%

Mevushal: Yes

Date Reviewed: 2/21/07

Color: 2.5 (of 3)

Note: A nice garnet color with some soft brown tones to it.

Aroma: 6 (of 7)

Note: A delicious, fruity aroma of wild cherries and blackberries with background scents of oak and pipe tobacco. Well done!

Taste: 9 (of 10)

Note: This is just the kind of Merlot I like! Strong fruit, very dry, oak throughout and biting tannins at the very end. The fruit flavors of cherry and blackberry are full and lively, the oak is rich and flows from one end of the taste to the other, mild tea and tobacco flavors drift in and out and it ends with a crescendo of tannins and a long dry finish. Outstanding!

Total: 17.5 (of 20)

Food: I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent Merlot with penne with olives which is a pasta dish Linda makes with black olives, green olives, parsley, chopped tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, capers, tabasco and parmesan cheese. The olives and the Merlot are wonderful together. This is a purely Italian dish, not Israeli, but works great wherever fresh olives are grown.
