Batasiolo Langhe Nebbiolo

Winery: Batasiolo (they also make Rashi)

Year: 1998

Type: Red

Country: Italy

Grape Variety: Nebbiolo

Note:

Alcohol: 13%

Mevushal: Yes

Date Reviewed: 1/22/07

Color: 2 (of 3)

Note: A meaty garnet color that's a bit thin at the edges.

Aroma: 5.5 (of 7)

Note: Like so many Italian reds, it has an earthy scent, this time paired with scents of beef, spices, dried herbs and light fruit of plums and black cherries.

Taste: 7.5 (of 10)

Note: This Nebbiolo is quite dry and filled with deep, rich tannins that stretch from the beginning of the taste to the end and beyond. There are fruit flavors of plum and black cherry but they're not very strong. There are pepper and tea flavors that are a good compliment but the wine lacks body and it really detracts from the enjoyment. It becomes a wine with powerful tannins but not enough substance.

Total: 15 (of 20)

Food: I hadthis with my wife, Linda's, fabulous meatloaf. If there's a secret ingredient, it must be the dash of hot sauce. We also served mashed potatoes. The Nebbiolo has such an earthy flavor that it does well with meatloaf but I think it would have shown itself best with Linda's sweet and sour meatballs over white rice. That would have been a better match.
