Galil Yiron

Winery: Galil Mountain Winery

Year: 2003

Type: Red

Country: Israel (Upper Galilee)

Grape Variety: 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 7% Syrah

Note: Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels

Alcohol: 14.5%

Mevushal: No

Date Reviewed: 12/13/06

Color: 2.5 (of 3)

Note: A dark and rich ruby red color. Very nice.

Aroma: 6 (of 7)

Note: Filled with scents of ripe berries, wild cherries and plums along with oak and a nice touch of vanilla.

Taste: 8.5 (of 10)

Note: Unlike the '01, which has a fruitier beginning, this Yiron starts with dry strong tannins and a chewy texture. It has softer flavors of plum and cherry followed by oak, vanilla, tea and spices. The influence of the Syrah is noticeable, but not necessarily an improvement. I know lots of people are enamored with the Syrah grape these days, but I really think the '01 was a better blend. And that's a shame, because you can't find it in the U.S.

Total: 17 (of 20)

Food: I had this '03 Yiron with taco's and it was pretty good! The Syrah grapes give this vintage a little extra spice.
