Year: 2004

Type: Red

Country: Israel (Upper Galilee)

Grape Variety: Barbera

Note: Aged for 8 months in French oak barrels

Alcohol: 14%

Mevushal: No

Date Reviewed: 11/20/06

Color: 2 (of 3)

Note: A heavy dark purple color that seems a bit cloudy.

Aroma: 5.5 (of 7)

Note: Fruit aroma's of plum and black cherry combine with spices and fresh beef that remind you of a softer, milder version of a Chianti.

Taste: 8.5 (of 10)

Note: This is an old-style Italian grape that does surprisingly well in Israel. Plum and black cherry flavors dominate this pleasant Barbera along with a spice and tea flavor that's not harsh at all. There's very little oak to go with the tart fruitiness and light, mild tannins. A very pleasant, mild flavor with just the right amount of zing to it. Watch out for the high alcohol content, though. It'll sneak up on you.

Total: 16 (of 20)

Food: I had this Barbera with turkey burgers and it was quite good! The acidity level was just right for the grilled burgers and ground turkey makes a very good substitute if you want to have less beef in your diet. It would have been even better with pasta. It's a very Italian wine that begs for good garlic bread!
