Rashi Select Barolo

Winery: Batasiolo (Rashi)

Year: 2000

Type: Red

Country: Italy

Grape Variety: Nebbiolo

Note:

Alcohol: 13.5%

Mevushal: Yes

Date Reviewed: 9/7/06

Color: 1.5 (of 3)

Note: It's a beefy cherry red color that's very unusual but it's also very thin. A Barolo is never going to look like a Cabernet, but it shouldn't ever look watery.

Aroma: 5 (of 7)

Note: There's no real fruit aroma here at all. It smells like raw beef and spices.

Taste: 8 (of 10)

Note: The Barolo is a lot like a softer, milder version of a Chianti. It has that same earthy, meaty taste. It's very dry with moderate tannins. It does have a softness in the middle of the taste and a spicy finish, but, all in all, a disappointment.

Total: 14.5 (of 20)

Food: I had it with a Caprese salad, which wasn't right for it at all. Big mistake! It really needs a grilled steak. Now, I like my steaks well done but anyone who likes them rare might like this Barolo more than I did.
