Color:
2 (of 3)
Note:
It's a strong ruby color with
earthy tones and heavy legs. It looks rich but a little muddy.
Aroma:
6 (of 7)
Note:
It's filled with an earthy
smell of cherries and plums with hints of aok and leather.
Very sturdy, hard scents.
Taste:
9 (of 10)
Note:
The first thing I notice is
a very smooth, almost creamy, texture that slides over the
tongue. This is followed immediately by a surprising contrast
in the sharp tannins. The wine is semi-dry with complex flavors
of cherry, plum, pepper, smoke and oak, It's sharp, aggressive
and lively and not a wine to be taken lightly. There's good
balance between the acidity and sweetness of the fruit. It's
hard to find, but well worth looking for.

Food:
I had it with spaghetti with
a meat sauce made from ground turkey instead of ground beef.
This is another recipe from Bubbe, who always wants us to
eat better. At 13.9% alcohol, this Monastrell is very assertive
and much more like a fiesty Italian wine than a subtle French
wine. Very good with pasta, naturally, and would also be good
with spicy dishes. And at $8.99 it's a great value!
