Teal Lake Cabernet Merlot

Winery: Teal Lake

Year: 2003

Type: Red

Country: Australia

Grape Variety: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon & 49% Merlot

Note:

Alcohol: 13.5%

Mevushal: Yes

Date Reviewed: 7/10/06

Color: 2.5 (of 3)

Note: A dark garnet color with a bit of an orange hue at the edges.

Aroma: 5.5 (of 7)

Note: A medium balsamic scent with tones of blackberries and wild cherries. Hints of cedar as well. I expect more fruitiness from a wine that's half Cabernet, though.

Taste: 8 (of 10)

Note: The Teal Lake Cabernet Merlot is quite dry and loaded with tannins. It's surprisingly spicy with black pepper flavors that remind me of the Teal Lake Shiraz. The pepper flavor dominates the milder plum and wild cherry flavors. It's surprising to find such spicyness in a wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. It certainly comes from the Merlot, not the Cab.

Total: 16 (of 20)

Food: I had it with a Caprese salad with mozzarella, roasted red peppers and fresh cherry tomatoes from the garden, along with some wonderful Portuguese bread. Topped with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and crushed black pepper, this Cabernet Merlot blend matched very well.
