Gamla Merlot

Winery: Golan Heights Winery

Year: 2002

Type: Red

Country: Israel (Upper Galilee)

Grape Variety: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon

Note:

Alcohol: 14%

Mevushal: No

Date Reviewed: 6/29/06

Color: 2.5 (of 3)

Note: A nice dark ruby color with a good healthy glow.

Aroma: 6 (of 7)

Note: Very good fruity scent of wild cherries, blackberries and jam along with a light scent of fresh oak. Nicely done!

Taste: 8.5 (of 10)

Note: The Gamla is smooth and soft with a fruity start and a dry finish. It has lots of wild cherries, blackberries, a bit of plum, jam and oak. This is a really good blend of flavors. It's the younger brother of the Yarden Merlot, also from Golan Heights Winery, and the real difference is the length of time they're in oak barrels before bottling. The Gamla is bottled sooner and has less of an oak taste. One is not necessarily better than the other, it's really a matter of personal preference. They're both teriffic wines.

Total: 17 (of 20)

Food: I had it with spaghetti with a meat sauce made with ground turkey and mushrooms instead of hamburger. The credit has to go to Bubbe for this wonderful recipe!
